The 2020 election was, as we all know, one of the most consequential elections in history. I wanted to get involved in whatever way I was able, but phone-banking and letter writing just didn’t feel like it was enough. As a very politically-engaged person, I knew that getting involved and making change at a local level is one of the most important things to do, so I decided to volunteer for a campaign in Deschutes County where my hometown of Bend, Oregon is located. One of three County Commissioner positions was up for reelection, and I decided to reach out to the eventually successful campaign of Phil Chang, a local Democrat challenging an incumbent commissioner. After reaching out, I was welcomed on to the four-person social media team for the campaign.

Our four person team created content tailored to voters of all ages and demographics in Deschutes County, and worked to reach across party aisles through the use of policy-based social media content to convince Republican and non-affiliated voters to vote for Mr. Chang. Because this was a small, grass-roots campaign, I was able to work with the campaign manager to learn not only more about social media strategy, but about the inner workings of a political campaign. During my time volunteering with this campaign, I focused primarily on video planning, editing, and production.
